When did Copenhagen become the capital of Denmark?

The settlement was founded in 1167 but a fishing village existed in its place from the 10th century during the Viking period. This was a period when Danish, Norwegian and Swedish warriors were known for their raiding and settling across Europe - even as far as the Mediterranean, Istanbul and Vinland in modern-day Canada.

The capital of the country until the 1447 was nearby Roskilde, whose cathedral still holds the buried royalty of Denmark. Copenhagen became the capital when it grew rapidly as a trading powerhouse, forming the base for Denmark’s economic expansion overseas.

Today, Copenhagen remains the centre of Denmark’s culture, economy, and government.
